Worked example

For a lot of 5,000, AQL 1%, LTPD 5%, producer risk 5% and consumer risk 10%, the tool finds the smallest binomial plan within its search range that meets both probability conditions.

Formula and methodology

  1. The tool searches sample sizes and acceptance numbers using the binomial probability of acceptance.
  2. At AQL, probability of acceptance must be at least 1 − producer risk.
  3. At LTPD, probability of acceptance must not exceed consumer risk.

How to interpret the result

  • AQL is a design point for a sampling plan, not a promise that accepted lots contain no more than that percentage defective.
  • LTPD and consumer risk describe protection against poor lots at a second quality point.
  • Switching rules, tightened/reduced inspection and finite-lot corrections are outside this simplified design.

Common errors and limitations

  • Calling AQL an allowed defect percentage in every accepted lot.
  • Using an online Ac/Re value while claiming ISO 2859-1 compliance without the controlled standard.
  • Ignoring lot formation, random sampling and inspection switching rules.

Is this an ISO 2859-1 table lookup?

No. It designs a binomial plan from two quality points and two risks. Use the controlled standard for ISO 2859-1 inspection.

What are producer and consumer risks?

Producer risk is rejection probability at the AQL design point. Consumer risk is acceptance probability at the poorer LTPD point.

Why can sample size be large?

Tighter separation between AQL and LTPD or lower risk targets require more evidence.
