Measurement Uncertainty Basics

Measurement uncertainty expresses the dispersion of values reasonably attributable to a measurand. A budget defines the measurement model, converts sources to standard uncertainties, applies sensitivity coefficients and combines contributions.

Engineering workflow

  1. Define the measurand and model.
  2. Evaluate repeatability statistically where applicable.
  3. Convert certificates, resolution and other Type B sources to standard uncertainties.
  4. Account for sensitivity and correlation.
  5. State combined or expanded uncertainty with coverage information.

Worked example

Standard uncertainties 0.002, 0.0015 and 0.0006 mm combine as √(0.002²+0.0015²+0.0006²) = 0.00257 mm. With k=2, expanded uncertainty is 0.00514 mm.
