Measurement Uncertainty Basics
Measurement uncertainty expresses the dispersion of values reasonably attributable to a measurand. A budget defines the measurement model, converts sources to standard uncertainties, applies sensitivity coefficients and combines contributions.

Engineering workflow
- Define the measurand and model.
- Evaluate repeatability statistically where applicable.
- Convert certificates, resolution and other Type B sources to standard uncertainties.
- Account for sensitivity and correlation.
- State combined or expanded uncertainty with coverage information.
Worked example
Standard uncertainties 0.002, 0.0015 and 0.0006 mm combine as √(0.002²+0.0015²+0.0006²) = 0.00257 mm. With k=2, expanded uncertainty is 0.00514 mm.
