Gauge R&R Study Planning

A credible study begins before the spreadsheet. Select parts spanning the process, use trained operators who normally perform the work, repeat measurements in random order and preserve the actual fixture and setup method.

Engineering workflow

  1. Choose crossed design only when every operator can measure every part.
  2. Include representative part-to-part variation.
  3. Blind and randomise repeat trials where practical.
  4. Record resolution, method, fixture, environmental conditions and tolerance.
  5. Agree the evaluation convention before running the study.

Worked example

A common balanced design uses 10 parts, 3 operators and 2 or 3 trials. That convention is not mandatory; destructive tests or operator-specific parts require another design.

Limitations and checks

  • A study on unrepresentative parts can inflate %GRR even when absolute gauge variation is unchanged.
  • The balanced ANOVA calculator does not support nested or expanded studies.
